BOCCE BALL – A SMASH HIT – AND SO IS MEETCHU IN MACHU PICCHU!

October 26, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Today, distinguished musicians and educators competed in their first tournament of BOCCE BALL featuring the incomparable Francis Thumm, dazzling Joy Woodward, the brilliant Dennis Donley, the superb music maestro, Jim Trepasso, and yours truly.  The tension never let up – as we tossed the balls in the air trying to get closest to the Pallino!  The final score – so close – was 13-12. The winning team of Dennis, Joy, and Francis was jubilant – the losing team of Jim Trepasso and I  felt like winners -they had one more team member and we lost by only one toss that was only about one inch away from the winning toss!  If you’d like to attend our next match and cheer us on, let me know.  The next tournament will take place in Coronado.  After this first match – we have become seasoned pros!  We are even speaking Italian at the matches. . . .

MEETCHU IN MACHU PICCHU is a huge hit in Rosartio Beach, Mexico!  Not only are they playing it in the lobby of the legendary hotel but I’ve received e-mails from locals telling me how much they enjoy it!  If you would like to purchase a copy and make me very happy for the holidays – simply notify me via e-mail – and your CD will be in the mail.  The 2-Disc set of 21 original songs features the brillaint musicians  - Anthony Smith, Kevin Freeby, Tim McMahan, Gilbert Catellanons, Peter Sprague, Matt Schumacher, Gabe Sundy and vocalists, Phil Johnson, Jason Michael Snow, Mara Cooper, Gustavo Alcoser II,  Julie Sullivan, Carey Sorel, Michela Della Pozza, Stephen Grady, Phil Cobb,  Vince Rodriguez III, and Ana Marquez - And those cool lyricists – Joy Woodward, Carole and Bob Greenes, Brian Stevens, and Richie Attwood – and yours truly! With all this talent – the 21 song CD Collection is only $20.00 - but wait – the holiday are coming up – you can get  3 for $50. or 10 for only $150.00!!!

But wait a minute - how much better can you get than that????   Well, let me tell you – if you order by November 15 – you will get a coupon for a free breakfast and lunch with every CD  - at THE OLD TOWNHOUSE RESTAURANT  at 4941 Newport Ave in Ocean Beach, CA!  (with purchase of any entree of equal or great value).  SUCH A DEAL!!!  ORDER TODAY!!!

UFO’s and ROSARITO BEACH

October 20, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Reminder - don’t forget to attend the acclaimed author and Point Loma High graduate (Class of 76), JEFF BENNETT’s presentation on his book, BEYOND UFO’S – THE SEARCH FOR EXTRATERRESTRIAL LIFE in the ALUMNI ROOM 301 at Point Loma High School on Thursday, October 22 at 7pm followed by a VIP RECEPTION and BOOK SIGNING at the BRIGANTINE on SHELTER ISLAND. Bring your family and friends to this incredible event.  Jeff’s work is also on display as part of the Smithsonian exhibit at the National Mall in Washington D.C.  Hope to see you all there!

Just retuned from a three day holiday at the legendary ROSARITO BEACH HOTEL.  It was my first time in Mexico in a year and a half – and the hotel is still wonderful – with an incredible staff.  You won’t believe this but we were given OCEAN FRONT SUITES for $19.25 per day (for you history buffs, 1925 was the year the hotel opened).  On the trip were MARY MCDONALD (famed co-creator of the Fiesta de los Cumpleanos Bash), STEVE and MARTHA FUTTERMAN (organizers of the Imperial Beach Film Festival), and ED and MARIANNE LEON! ED and MARTHA entertained us singing with the Mariachis at every restaurant in town!  What wonderful singers!

And - MEETCHU IN MACHU PICCHU was a hit at the hotel – the manager had it playing daily in the hotel lobby – it was a major hit!!!!  And my favorite story was when my key didn’t work to get into my room on our last night. No one including Security could get the room to open – but finally, one of the  Guards scaled the building into my second floor balcony (I had left the balcony door open) and was able to open the door.  Later in the evening, they repaired the problem and I was given a new key card. (I was worried that I would have to make like Spiderman and scale the bulding myself but fortunately this was not the case!).  A great three days with wonderful friends, music, fine dining, delicious drinks (we “sampled”) and an incredible deal!  Mary and I are definitely going to plan a Fiesta there in February – and wait until you see the new edition to the hotel  with its rooftop swimming pool and outdoor bars – it’s just lavish!!!

Hope to see you all this Thursday at the very SPECIAL JEFF BENNETT EVENT!

Gotta Sing Gotta Dance Hall of Fame NEEDS NEW HOME!

October 8, 2009 · 1 Comment

Hey Everyone – sorry to report this – but the fantastic Gotta Sing Gotta Dance Hall of Fame now located at Point Loma High School in the Library/Media Center will most likely have to be moved to another location.  For those of you who have not seen it – there are over 3,000 alumni featured in the Hall of Fame – singing and dancing their hearts out – all beautifully framed with gold plaques indicating the years under each framed exhibit board.  I need your help as soon as possible.  Does anyone have any suggestions or contacts to move the Hall of Fame off campus to a public building or exhibit area – public library, restaurant, office building, bank, Studio, Music or Dance building, etc?  The Hall of Fame has the potential to become a very popular exhibit off campus when you consider it was a unique one-of-a-kind musical theater program in America that has been written about in the L.A. Times, U.S.A. Today, New York Post, People Magazine, Vogue, Entertainment Weekly, and has made international press as well – BBC, La Republica, etc – plus television - Quest for Excellence documentary, CNN, MSNBC, Warner Bros Celebrity Justice and local media as well!

I spent a full year restoring all the boards, reshooting photos, and creating new boards  as well as having everything framed under glass for generations to enjoy.  I am very worried that the display is going to be taken down very soon – and because of limited storage on campus – it will be destroyed or disappear.  Please! Please! Please!  If you have any ideas, let me know as soon as possible! Contact me via telephone or at my e-mail.  I thought initially that this was going to be a permanent display at the school – but was evidently incorrect.

Thanks so much for your consideration of this bit of Point Loma Musical Theatre History featuring alumni who have become everything from Doctors, Public and Private School Teachers, Lawyers, Scientists, San Diego City Council Members, Administrators,  CEO’s, University Professors, Businesspeople to famous Artists, Designers, Recording Artists, Composers, Film and Stage Directors, Actors, Dancers, Authors, Animators, Film Editors, TV producers, and more.  Send me your ideas for a new location – it will be great to hear from you!

That topic came up quite often – and as long as we have people to help me – count me in!  Also attended a party celebrating the 40th Reunion from Point Loma High at Ed Leon’s house on Sunday – I wasn’t teaching yet – but it was great seeing so many talented and creative people at this event as well.

ALUMNI NEWS SPOTLIGHT - Don’t miss the hit film, CLOUDY WITH MEATBALLS - one of the animators is the talented, Michael Ford, from the class of 1990.  And JEFF BENNETT (class of 76) , author of BEYOND UFO’S – THE SEARCH FOR EXTRATERRESTRIAL LIFE, will be speaking at Point Loma High on Thursday, October 22 - and in the evening there will be a presentation for alumni and friends at Point Loma High with a reception following at a local restaurant/bar.  Please tell your friends!  You are all invited and I’d love to have a big turnout.  Jeff also has an exhibit of the Solar System at the National Mall in Washington D.C. – part of the Smithsonian Museum – very impressive!  For more information about his visit, feel free to contact me!
